42nd Street
Genre: Theater
Background: 42nd Street
is closing January 2, 2005, so this is your
last chance to see this landmark show! Based
on the classic 1933 movie musical of the
same name, 42nd Street concerns the story
of a naive young actress named Peggy Sawyer
who arrives to audition for the new Julian
Marsh extravaganza set to open on Broadway
starring aging leading lady Dorothy Brock.
A classic backstage Broadway story, the
original 1980 production of 42nd Street
was one of the Great White Way's longest-running
hits, running for 3,486 performances under
the watchful eye of legendary producer David
Merrick.
The musical is an adaptation of a 1933 film
classic about Peggy Sawyer, an ambitious
tap dancer from Allentown, PA, who arrives
in New York, gets a job in the chorus of
a Broadway musical and winds up substituting
for the star on opening night. The show
boasts the legendary admonition to Peggy
from the director: “You're going out
there a chorus girl — but you've got
to come back A STAR!” The score includes
“Shuffle Off to Buffalo,” “We're
in the Money,” “Lullaby of Broadway”
and the title song.
