Background: Caroline, or Change is a new musical by Tony Kushner and Jeanine Tesori. It is set in Louisiana in 1963, at the time of the burgeoning Civil Rights movement and the Kennedy assassination. Caroline, a black maid, and Noah, the son of the Jewish family she works for, struggle to find an identity for their friendship.

The musical follows the unique relationship between Noah and Caroline as each attempt to deal with the change in their lives.

Caroline, a black, single mother of 39, is maid to a well-to-do Jewish family in 1963 Louisiana. A life already difficult becomes more so as she faces unsettling changes within her family, the surrounding St Charles area and American society as a whole. The story is shaped by her changing (again) relationship with the son of the family for whom she works.

Caroline, or Change premiered off-Broadway at the Public Theater, where it ran from November 30, 2003 through February 1, 2004.
