Drums descend from the roof as if by magic.
Acrobats tumble head over heels in defiance
of gravity, performing feats of amazing
physical skill. There's even an outrageous
clown who teases audience members before
the show begins. Sometimes there's almost
too much happening all at once: performers
crawl across a moving stage and along the
walls, or descend on long elastic bands
from the rafters. It's all part of the show's
strange, non-linear plot, but it's best
not to dwell on that. Just relax and give
yourself over to the enchantment.
The show is a broad mixture of jaw-dropping
circus style acrobatics and gymnastics,
fantastical avant-garde theater style dance
and production numbers, and some laugh-out-loud
comic relief. It’s all wrapped up
in an almost hallucinatory package of special
effects fog, soaring (and descending) hydraulic
staging, and ethereal music all of which
only reinforces the dreamlike quality of
the production.
Cirque Du Soleil opened its production of
"Mystere" in December of 1993
at Treasure Island. Since that time, it
has remained a standard by which all other
Las Vegas productions are measured. Additionally,
because of the success of "Mystere,"
the way has been paved for additional Cirque
productions in Vegas. "O" at Bellagio,
"Zumanity" at New York, New York,
and future productions at the MGM Grand,
Mirage, etc. Cirque Du Soleil is going to
be home in Las Vegas for a long time.
