Take 81 acrobats, contortionists, dancers
and divers, put in some singers and musicians,
then just add water. Now you have the basic
ingredients of 'O' -- Cirque du Soleil's
$120 million production that has been drawing
99-percent-capacity crowds and was voted
Best Show on the Strip. 'O' (a pun on "eau,"
the French word for water) is a sensual,
childlike, amusing and mesmerizing work
of living art framed by high-tech lighting
and staging effects. Gymnasts perform a
parallel bar routine as they continually
immerse themselves in water, while Russian
acrobats take turns diving into the water,
sailing and twisting through the air. The
clowns (whether trying to shield themselves
from a pre-show rainstorm or keep their
house above water) fuse humor and humanity
into the show.
And let's not forget the water. With an
international cast performing in, on and
above a 1.5-million-gallon pool of water,
there's a possibility of getting wet (look
out for the clowns!). The pool contains
several hydraulic lifts that are used to
reshape the surface of the water from an
empty lake to a distant shore to a tiny
pool, and the lifts can give the illusion
of walking on the water, slowly descending
into it and any combination in between.
This never-finished work in progress also
boasts elaborate and wonderful costumes,
airborne carousel horses, parades of weird-looking
things and an eclectic mix of sounds, including
a harp, bagpipe and a little bit of opera
thrown in for good measure.
