Artist: Come Fly With Me
Genre: Broadway
Background: Directed
by Paul Blake , Come Fly With Me: The
Songs and Stories of Sammy Cahn is a richly
entertaining show not to be missed!. Cahn
made a memorable appeareance in the Broadway
presentation in 1974. with his demise
in 1993, many would have thought that
they would never get to see another show.
but this hugely popular show returns and
continues to entertain its fan.
The show is an anecdotally told story
of a musically gifted Jewish boy born
in 1913. He took birth on New York’s
Lower East Side and became one of America’s
most successful lyricists. The stress
does not remain on detailed autobiography
but on delivering some good stories about
Cahn’s writing. These writings were
like that of composers Jule Styne, Saul
Chaplin, Jimmy Van Heusen, Gene DePaul
and Nicholas Brodsky for singers such
as Frank Sinatra, Doris Day and Mario
Lanza.
Cast: Bruce Adler (Sammy Cahn) and Avery
Sommers, Kate Manning, Joseph LeBlanc
Adler remains the unparallel singer-comedian-actor
entertainer who hails from a family of
outstanding artists of the American Yiddish
stage. He is the expert at telling a good
joke or story.
Three vocalists manage heavy duty singing.
Kate Manning has a beautifully trained
voice, that is neither overly emphatic
or misses the required sentiments.
The veteran Avery Sommers, displays his
jazz talent and does proper justice.
Joseph LeBlanc, described as “the
young American tenor,” is an opera
singer.
The simple set (a piano ornamented with
vibrant, colorful flowers, stools along
with a sky blue background bordered with
black curtains) makes an ideal setting.
The ladies' dresses are attractive and
flaterring. The men are dressed aptly.
The notable songs during the course of
the evening include “Bei Mir Bist
Du Schon,” “I’ll Walk
Alone,” “Day By Day,”
“Three Coins in the Fountain,”
“All The Way,” “Love
and Marriage,” and “The Things
We Did Last Summer.”
