Don Quixote has also commonly referred to as the first modern novel. Don Quixote was originally conceived by Cervantes when he was spending time in jail for some financial fraud. The relationship between the two is ultimately founded upon mutual respect. In their continuous dialogs, they gradually take on some of each other's attributes.

His zealousness blinds him from reality, he imagines windmills to be giants, flocks of sheep to be armies, and galley-slaves to be oppressed gentlemen. During his adventures, Sancho is given a mock title of Governor of the Isle of Barataria, and Don Quixote is bested in a duel with the Knight of the White Moon.
