Love is a pain-in-the-belly by Gregg Coffin.
It comes in the form of a musical comedy.
Its a horrible mess out there which is gathered
up and delivered to you in style. But anyway,
its a mess. And you should not miss it because
it is such a huge, mammoth mess. The press
describes it as a story of "Five dates.
Five restaurants. One chance at love. Five
Course Love is a new musical that is equal
parts comedy and music with heaping portions
of that elusive search for love thrown in
for good measure. Three actors portray fifteen
characters whose amorous combinations are
played out using an array of musical styles."
The story and the concept of the play
is a veritable wonder. The play shifts
gears quite fast and then is roller coaster
ride of sorts. The music is something
that takes you to another level. Here
is all there is to its music - pop, western,
German cabaret, Italianate opera, Motown,
country, doo-wop and more. There are just
three actors who play an astounding 15
characters in five scenes which quickly
follow one another in different restaurants.
Every scene is complemented by well-suited
cuisines and music that matches the food.
Five Course Love is brought to us by the
Geva Theater Center. Five Course Love
was premiered there in 2004. It goes through
many appetizing moods. The cast is a hard-working
and talented trio who make the out-of
the-world story an enjoyable reality.
Matt (John Bolton), Barbie (Heather Ayers)
and Dean (Jeff Gurner) are the tumultuous
trio that bring the show to fruition.
The trio change their costume, accent
and character with breezy co-ordination.
Bolton is immaculate when it comes to
comedy. Gurner is as lovable in his five
waiter characters.
The play is superbly put together by
Emma Griffin, the director. G.W. Mercier
adds the valuable elements as the designer
of costumes and set. There is also a lively
four-men band above the set. Its a menage-a-trois
that is hard to miss.
So be at the maddest show of the year.
But make sure that you get the tickets
well in advance from the on-line ticket
vendors.
