Background: Set in Baltimore, 1962, Hairspray is the story of Tracy Turnblad, a perky, overweight, unpopular teen fulfilling her dream of dancing on the local TV program, The Corny Collins Show. Not only does she become a regular on the show but she also steals the affections of heartthrob, Link Larkin, from the reigning teen princess, Amber Von Tussle and leads a movement to fully integrate the program, much to the dismay of bigoted, station-owner Velma Von Tussle, Amber's mother.

It's 1962 and Baltimore teen Tracy Turnblad has only one dream--to dance on the popular Corny Collins Show. When her dream comes true, Tracy is transformed from social outcast to sudden star, but she must use her newfound power to vanquish the reigning teen queen, win the affections of heartthrob Link Larkin and integrate a TV network, all without denting her 'do!

We love the new songs written for the musical production of Hairspray and can't stop tapping our toes to Good Morning Baltimore, Momma, I'm a Big Girl Now and Welcome to the 60s, all great 50s and 60s finger-snapping sounds. Based on the 1988 John Waters film, Hairspray follows the dream of pleasantly plump Tracy Turnblad and her bid to become a dancer on the Corny Collins Dance Show, followed by her fight for integration in 1960s Baltimore. The question is, as Hairspray's producers put it "can a trendsetter in dance and fashion vanquish the program's reigning princess, win the heart of heartthrob Link Larkin and integrate a television show without denting her 'do?"

Based on John Waters' classic film of the same name, this bebop musical (which premiered in 2002) tells the fun, flouncing story of "a big girl with big dreams - and even bigger hair" who sets out to desegregate the local TV dance show. She becomes a local celebrity, and in the glee and glitz of the early 60's, teaches a few light lessons about tolerance, understanding, and cosmetics to the TV audience.
