Artist:
Humble Boy
Genre: Musical Play
Background: Humble Boy is the play from Charlotte Jones. Although it does not saying, with such a strong cast the acting cant be less than brilliant. The set design, the music, the lighting, and every detail of the production has been polished to a point above excellence. The play in itself – its writing, the conceptions it embodies, and the way it tells its story reaches an epitome of skill.
Felix Humble is a research fellow in theoretical astrophysics at Cambridge University and is obsessed at finding his Eureka moment, that would define his career. He returns home after the sudden death of his father. He is distraught at his loss.
To make matters worse, his dominating, vain and attractive mother Flora has removed all traces of his father's existence form his home. He also makes the shocking discovery that his mother is on the brink of marrying a man totally unlike his father. He later finds out that the man, George Pye, had been having an affair with his mother even before his father's death.
George Pye on the other hates Felix because he broke his daughter Rosie's heart. Felix and Rosie had a long affair which was abruptly broken by Felix when he went to Cambridge for his fellowship. Felix also later finds out that he is the father of Rosie's Child. Jim the Gardner is his only source of advice and comfort.
All these events eventually lead to the Eureka moment that Felix was searching for, but it beings together healing, forgiveness and self-acceptance for the entire Humble Clan.
The roles of Felix and Flora Humble are depicted brilliantly by Simon Russel and Felicity Kendal respectively. The rest of the cast Dennis Quilley, Marcia Warren, Cathryn Bradshaw and William Gaunt, are just as faultless in their supporting roles. The play is brilliant, this is despite the fact that there is nothing original about the play or its theme. Jones has certainly done her homework among the science text-books, and she knows how it can be converted into good humor.
Humble Boy is cleverly crafted and beautifully written. It explores a theme that touches everyones life. It is bittersweet, witty and perceptive, definitely a play to remember.
