Background: Giacomo Puccini's LA BOHEME, however, has often defied that characterization. With his production of LA BOHEME, Aussie director Baz Luhrmann sets out to bring the much loved opera to the people. In a press release Luhrmann explains "When Puccini and his librettists (Giuseppe Giacosa and Luigi Illica) created LA BOHEME, opera was actually the popular entertainment of the day. With our cast of young singers, we hope to tell this story in a way that will appeal not only to the people who love Puccini's music, but to the younger audiences who may never have seen an opera before."

Prior to the sensational acclaim he enjoyed with "Moulin Rouge" in 2001, Luhrmann was best known among the cinema cognoscenti for his adorable 1992 romance "Strictly Ballroom." That film was followed up in 1996 by "William Shakespeare's Romeo & Juliet," a highly stylized telling of the Bard's classic which starred Claire Danes and Leonardo DiCaprio.
