Artist:
La Boheme
Genre: Theater
Background: Giacomo Puccini's
LA BOHEME, however, has often defied that
characterization. Over the years, this tale
of passion among the impecunious has been
used as the template for a number of romances.
The ever-so hip RENT, winner of the 1996
Pulitzer/Tony-winning musical, doffs its
beret to the original source in its song
"La Vie Boheme." And, let's not
forget the revolutionary effect Puccini's
opera had on Cher's character as she is
literally swept off her feet by Nicolas
Cage in the popular 1987 film "Moonstruck."
With his production of LA BOHEME, Aussie
director Baz Luhrmann sets out to bring
the much loved opera to the people. In a
press release Luhrmann explains "When
Puccini and his librettists (Giuseppe Giacosa
and Luigi Illica) created LA BOHEME, opera
was actually the popular entertainment of
the day. With our cast of young singers,
we hope to tell this story in a way that
will appeal not only to the people who love
Puccini's music, but to the younger audiences
who may never have seen an opera before."
