Match
Genre: Broadway
Background: Stephen Belber's
Match is the first new play to open cold
on Broadway in a gazillion years (we looked
it up). The drama, starring two Tony winners
and a Hollywood star/Broadway newbie (Frank
Langella, Jane Adams and Ray Liotta, respectively)
opened on Broadway on April 8. To celebrate,
the cast and company headed to Chelsea hotspot
Metronome for toasting, cheering and joyful
partying.
"I love my life. I regret my life.
After a while the lines blur and all it
is is my life." So says Tobi, the central
character in Stephen Belber's gripping comic
drama Match. Played by the excellent Frank
Langella, Tobi is a choreographer and dance
instructor at Juilliard. Now in his 60s,
he lives alone in a cluttered apartment
in Inwood. As the play progresses, the decisions
that he made in the past have repercussions
in the present. Tobi is forced to consider
that age-old question, "If I had to
do it all again, would I make different
choices?"
A drama by one of the hottest new playwrights
on the theater scene, Match is making its
world premiere with this Broadway engagement.
In the show, a husband and wife arrive on
the doorstep of a once renowned dancer to
interview him about his past. By night's
end what they have learned will change them
all forever.
