Artist:
Perfect Crime
Genre: Broadway
Background: Perfect Crime
is a play not just about perfect crime but
perfect direction, cast and a history of
more than two decades. Perfect Crime is
the longest-running non-musical play in
New York either on or Off-Broadway. Its
history of two decades is a history of consistently
sold out performances.
In the beginning, Perfect Crime was adapted
for the Broadway in 1980. Warren Manzi,
at just 25 was the writer and director
of the play. Thus he was the youngest
American to have a show on the Broadway.
But things did not work out with the producer
and off he went to LA to write screenplays.
One remarkable outcome of that effort
- ''Clue.''
Catherine Russell is the show's general
manager as well as the leading lady. She
plays the mysterious Margaret Thorne Brent,
the tough and sexy heroine of the play.
She is the number one suspect for the
multiple murders that take place. She
is a psychiatrist who is suspected of
having murdered her husband and a few
other people. But there is another turn
as a cunning detective is appointed to
investigate the murders. How the shrewd
lady tackles him is what makes it watchable.
All along the two decades it has received
wild accolades. Catherine Russell is the
pillar of the performances. She has been
absent in only four of nearly 7500 performances.
That is another wonder to this enigmatic
play.
David Butler, David McDonald, Patrick
Robustelli and Ed Sala are the experts
that make up the cast. The director who
has kept the show going on and on is Jeffrey
Hyatt . The sets are handiwork of Jay
Stone & Warren Manzi who is all over
the play with his perfectionism.
