Slava Polunin was born and bred in a small town in Russia,
away from the bustling of the city. Forests, fields
and rivers had been his childhood companions. His world
was a world of fantasy, where he would indulge in dreams
and make up stories. He would construct 4-storey tree
houses as well as snow towns. He would also organize
great funny parties for his friends. He fell in love
with mimes and clowns watching TV and cinema. His greatest
dream was now to be a clown.
His strong passion led him to pursue his dream. When
17, he went to Leningrad. He came here to study engineering
but soon joined a mime studio. Here he developed his
love for the art and craft of the true clown. In 1979,
Slava and his theatre company was founded. This took
clowing out in the streets. Subsequently it moved to
the big theaters of the world.
Slava's reputation grew rapidly as he mixed alternative
clowning with that of visual theatre. Fans travelled
far to be a part of his laughing world. Former students
of Slava have now formed their own companies. many have
cast in productions of the Cirque du Soleil, or pursued
successful independent careers.
