The Great American Trailer Park Musical
Genre: Musical Play
Background: The Great American
Trailer Park Musical is the latest installment
by David Nehls and Betsy Kelseo. It was
showcased and immediately caught the waves
at New York Music Theater Festival , 2004.
Carter Calvert, Jenn Colella, Robin Baxer,
Dan Sharky, Marya Grandy Geoff Scheer and
Amanda Ryan Paige starred in that first
outing.
It is melodrama around domestic life
located in a North Florida trailer park.
Jeannie (Carter Calvert), suffers from
agoraphobia. She even fears stepping farther
than the doorstep. Norbert (Dan Sharkey),
the husband, is frustrated no end thanks
to his wife. He spends the nights at a
nearby strip club, where he falls for
a dancer Pippi. Jenn Colella stars as
the dancer. The fun begins when the sexy
dancer moves into the trailer across the
yard. Its a simple story of love and lust
until Duke, her ex-boyfriend sets out
to win her back.
The story then becomes a roller coaster
of sorts. Robin Baxter, Marya Grandy and
Amanda Ryan Paige hold the piece together
as the funniest trio who are the neighbors
and singing narrators. They narrate the
proceedings to the tunes of The Andrews
Sisters, The Bee Gees, The Dixie Cups
and The Dixie Chicks. They also play all
sorts of extra characters as strippers,
hotel maids, food court employees and
customers etc etc. The country blues sound
good in Carter Calvert's voice. The fun
extends to fantasy sequences that have
to be watched out for.
The music is a mix of boogie woogie, disco
and country blues. There are scenes which
brings imagination to its barest minimum.
For example, in a song about road kill
Duke rides a converted shopping cart across
the interstate as the singing trio toss
stuffed animals onto his path. There are
also serious moments in the show but not
without a comical edge.
The Great American Trailer Park Musical
is an easy and unpretentious entertainment
that does not tax the brain. But in terms
of imagination and writing there is no
compromise. The show is a crowd puller
and usually runs to full houses. So when
you plan to be there do get the tickets
from your on-line ticket vendor.
