The Sacramento Ballet
Genre: Ballet
Background:
The Sacramento Ballet was founded in 1954 with the efforts of Barbara and Deane Crockett. During the tenure of Ms. Crockett’s as director of the organization, The Sacramento Ballet gained national recognition as one of the finest arts companies in the region. The Ballet was able to grow and prosper over the years because of the formation of the Ballet Guild and grants from the Sacramento Metropolitan Arts Commission, California Arts Council, and the National Endowment for the Arts. The ballet was also able to hire a resident company of professional dancers.
In 1986, having achieved her goal of making The Sacramento Ballet a professional company, Ms. Crockett retired as the company director. In 1988 Ron Cunningham became the new artistic director, and was joined by his wife Carinne Binda the following year. The two became co-artistic directors in 1991. During Cunningham’s tenure the Ballet's enhanced its reputation as the leading arts organization in Sacramento.
The Sacramento Ballet has since held world premieres of works like Carmina Burana, The Rite of Spring and Bolero. It has also staged classics like The Nutcracker, Romeo and Juliet, and Cinderella. The Ballet has attracted to its stage a wide array of performers and guest artists such as Septime Webre, David Parsons, Kathryn Posin, Alan Hineline, and John Clifford. In its 17 seasons to date, the Ballet has added 13 full-length ballets, 17 Balanchine masterworks, 34 Sacramento premieres, and 32 world premieres to its portfolio.
The Sacramento Ballet has taken a leadership role in outreach, education, community service and collaborative projects. It reaches communities through its touring program. The ballet travels throughout the greater Sacramento Region and sometimes as far as Hawaii, Washington, and Victoria, B.C. Through its educational and Outreach Program, the Ballet reached over 40,000 participants last season. The Ballet receives annual funding from foundations and government agencies like The California Arts Council, National Endowment for the Arts, Sacramento Regional Foundation, Sacramento Metropolitan Arts Council, The James Irvine Foundation and others.
